IRIXYS Summer Workshop 2025 recap

Between 2 and 6 June 2025, the 34th IRIXYS Young Scientists’ Summer Workshop took place at the University of Passau.

The workshop was opened by Prof. Harald Kosch (University of Passau), Prof. Lionel Brunie (INSA Lyon) and Prof. Gabriele Gianini (University of Milano-Bicocca). In addition to young scientists, industry representatives also participated once again.

A highlight of the second day was the reception hosted by Alexandre Vulic, the French Consul General. He opened the panel discussion ‘Navigating the EU AI Act: Insights by Legal Experts from Germany and France’. Roland Wossidlo, Martin Pfeil and Michael Endres from Atos, the multinational IT service provider headquartered in France, shared insights from industrial practice.

Prof. Michael Beurskens (University of Passau) then concluded the panel with a presentation in which he critically examined the EU AI Act from a legal perspective. This was followed by a lively discussion with the audience.

On the third day, participants visited the Grafenau Technology Campus, which is under the scientific direction of Prof. Diane Ahrens. There, we explored the interdisciplinary research fields of Smart Region, Business Data Analytics & Optimisation, and Applied AI. The campus’s projects address the key challenges of digitalisation in industry and society, urbanisation, and sustainability.

Once again, the IRIXYS series demonstrated the value of international collaboration between academia and industry. “The IRIXYS workshop is an impressive example of how international cooperation drives innovation, especially at the intersection of science, digitalisation and artificial intelligence,“ said Prof. Harald Kosch.

Finally, two doctoral candidates successfully defended their PhDs within the programme. The entire IRIXYS team warmly congratulates Dr. Sebastian Wilhelm and Dr. Sahib Julka on this outstanding achievement and wishes them every success in their future careers!

We had a wonderful week and warmly thank all participants for their contributions. We are looking forward to the upcoming Winter Workshop, which is taking place in a few weeks.
